The things that you see in Guatemala more than make up for the small inconveniences that have to be dealt with, but in this entry, I am writing about the thing that one thing that is really shitting me. The showers.
Showers in cheap Guatemalan hotels all use instant electric water heaters. Most have no temperature control.
Our shower in Antigua gave a poorly sprinkle of tepid water. In an attempt to get properly wet, I pulled a little plug thing out of the side of the heater and a solid jet of water pumped onto my face and gave me a terrific electric shock.
At Tikal, the shower was only available from 6AM to 9AM. At which time all tourists staying at the hotel are on the sunrise tour.
The shower here in Flores, which I just used to rinse two days of jungle filth off my body, produces a dribble of water so hot that I actually scalded my hand testing it. I went to reception and asked for another room – but were told they are all the same. Instead, they offered to turn the heater off and laughed uproariously. Tourists, they pay extra for hot water then make you turn it off!. I showered under the cold dribble but actually, in this tropical humidity, that was quite agreeable and I have finally found a shower I kind of like.
Anyway, our hotel has an excellent view of the beach - as in the photo.
