Greetings from Cape Verde!
It is wonderful to be back in CV. I have been planning this trip two years before I began medical school. In part, I came last year to volunteer so I could return here to do research.
I am in the Capital City of Praia, a city that is unfamiliar to me. The Crioulo spoken here is quite different from mine although I am able to understand most of it. I find myself, many times unconsciously, switching my accent to match that of those around me. Many years of living in various cities and speaking various languages has giving me the capacity to adapt quite well to new environments and accents.
Thus far, I find the people and the city quite welcoming. I have been warned to be extra careful because the incidence of crime is highest here than anywhere else in CV. The capital is remarkably different from my little quiet colonial town of Ribeira Brava where I was born.
It is very hot and somewhat humid here. The Center where I work has AC, but at home, I find myself uncomfortably hot and sweaty. The mosquitoes have discovered my blood as their favorite dessert. I curse at them quite frequently although not outloud, at least not when someone is nearby. I fail to see their place in nature, besides one of destruction and chaos.
Besides, the mosquito bites and the heat, I´m quite happy. Sunshine seem to bring a bright smile out of me. I have not yet gone to the beach. I will be there soon as I must acquire more than a hint of color before I visit my island. Otherwise, I will be suject to the neverending, ´´You look so pale. You need some sun.´´ I also had the pleasure of seeing the Cape Verdean National Football (Soccer) Team play against Gambia. It was an exciting and nerve-recking game. It made me realize how much I missed watching a soccer game in a stadium. I look forward to doing many of the things I have not gotten a chance to do in a long time while in the U.S.
All of this to say that all is well. Much love,
V.
