This picturesque city was host to a marathon today and the streets closest to the harbour were shut off from cars to allow free passage to the athletes. The boiling hot summers day lit up the colourful city and made my walk through the centre a delight. Now living in the Philippines I’m used to every day boasting beautiful sunshine and temperatures between 27-40 degrees Celsius and most of the time I’ll hide from the beating sun so I don’t get cooked. Here in Sweden they have to endure long winters so when the summer comes around everyone throws off their clothes and walks around in as little as possible. Everywhere a patch of grass grows lies a sunbather soaking up the rays.
The city’s architecture is beautiful boasting interesting cathedrals with contrasting strong colours that guided me towards them from any vantage point I could find. I sat on a bridge overlooking the marathon track. The runners were firmly encouraged as they ran past the spectators with whistles and clapping and at one point there were a group of Swedish girls dancing to the sound of Brazilian drums, I think this would be more of a distraction then anything else, but none of the runners stopped to watch.
Sail away was fantastic as we headed between the many islands that make up Sweden’s coastline. There were numerous little settlements on the riverside and people came out of their homes to wave to the Navigator as she sailed out to sea.
