The quiet of the cathedral felt like a sanctuary compared to the noisy ship I have spent the last month on, and the forty minutes sat in silence calmed my mind.
The city is beautiful and the day I spent wandering around took me past streets of beautiful buildings, tranquil canals and hundreds of bikes stacked higgledy-piggledy against each other. The architecture is much like that of Stockholm with interesting intricate buildings donning colourful roofs. As with all of Scandinavia, It’s an expensive place and I decided walking would be the cheapest and best option to explore.
One of the main attractions is Tivoli Gardens, an amusement park packed with fair ground rides, beautifully kept gardens, a concert hall and a daily jazz big band set. I went to Tivoli on my first ship in 2003 so I passed on the $15 entry fee and followed the numerous canals back to the port.
There were a few escaped brightly coloured cows that I’d seen twice before – once in Zurich Switzerland, and recently in Vigo, Spain. They looked impressively out of place in the historic city, as did the lingerie poster I spotted on the street and photographed.
Copenhagen is a favourite place of mine and I hold it fondly in my heart. There are numerous wonderful places to eat, fantastic beers to try, a huge array of live music, and beautiful women. Most Danish are very friendly and welcoming. They have a great sense of hospitality and a love of their city. The main draw back for a traveller is the sheer expense of every day things.
However, It is possible to find token bikes dotted around the city. All you need to do is put in your change (1 Danish Krone – I think) adjust the seat and off you go. When you’re done with the bike find another terminal, park the bike and get your money back. The bikes are brightly coloured and very easy to spot. One of the main problems with the system is that they are often damaged or scarce, but I have managed to find a couple of working ones when needed. Try not to ride the bikes back to your hotel drunk. The police don’t take kindly to drunk tourists weaving down the middle of their peaceful streets. Words of advice – save up some cash and go for the weekend. Aim to go in the summer when the sun is shining and you could spend your time sitting in a traditional bar listening to live music, or exploring the delights of the famous Tivoli gardens - a beautiful place to be.
