Our last stop of the day was Lake Nicaragua. It, again, was absolutely beautiful – everything here is. We took a boat tour of the islands within the lake, which was incredibly cool. The lake is huge – to give you an idea of the size, there are 365 inhabitable islands. Most are big enough for just one home and family to live on. There are 4 islands which house schools, and the children row themselves between home and school each day. Some foreigners keep vacation homes, which a local family lives in and keeps up during the rest of the year. The lake is also the only place in the world (I think) with freshwater sharks. Bull sharks somehow made it into the lake and can survive in the freshwater. Luckily, we didn’t see any of those.
With the sun setting and Mt. Mombacho, an inactive volcano with a cloud forest on top, in the background, it was honestly the perfect ending to a perfect day.
