We left Christchurch on the 29th of May and after yet more scenic driving arrived at Lake Tekapo. The lake itself was huge and a lovely blue colour surrounded by towering mountains around its edge. We strolled around the lake, viewing its little chapel and the statue of a Collie dog and enjoyed a peaceful night in front of the log fire in the hostel drinking one of our bottles of wine from Marlborough.
The next day we drove on further inland to Mount Cook and the southern Alps, getting our first glimpse of snow capped peaks as we approached along the highway. Once checked into our log cabin-esq hostel we went out on foot taking in the views from the Hermitage hotel and from a local walkway up behind the hotel.
In the afternoon we then headed down the Tasman Valley road to another hiking spot where we walked to the base of the Tasman Glacier, we couldn't actually see the Glacier from where the walk ended but we did see some large and small ice bergs melting in the river.
The next day we headed to the party capital of New Zealand, Queenstown.
