All is well in Costa Rica... Our flight came in safely, etc. We stayed in Alajuela for the first few nights. Not much going on there. Took the bus to La Fortuna a few days ago. Went to Arenal Volcano to hike around. We saw an Eyelash Viper, a beautiful yellow snake, and many monkeys. Very cool. Later that night the volcano spewed some lava for us, which was my first time seeing lava. Then the tour took us to a hot springs, which was a resort with lots of hot tub-like pools that were supposedly naturally hot, though some of them seemed chlorinated. yesterday we hiked to a waterfall near Arenal, it was gorgeous.
Today we took a jeep-boat-jeep across Lake Arenal, which dumped us out in Monteverde/Santa Elena. The town of Santa Elena kind of sucks. Tomorrow we may go to the cloud forest of Santa Elena. Word is that it is very dense and the animals have left the trail areas, but it should make for some nice hiking.
Tonight the Cavs are playing the Pistons in game 6. TNT is carried widely across the country, so I thought it wouldnt be a problem to watch it, but unfortunately, Costa Rica is playing Chile in soccer, which clearly takes precedence over measly US basketball games. We searched around for a while, but to no avail. The few TV's that werent being used only went up to channel 40-something (TNT is 60-something). so after walking around in the rain for a while, I decided to come to an internet cafe. I can listen here, which is nice...
anyhoo, we're probably heading to Puntarenas in a few days and then to the Peninsula, then down the coast... more updates later.
