Thus began the latest in the somewhat wild erratic antics of Laura and Robert Malone. We were tired of remodeling since we got back from Panama, and Robert had heard a story that the 60 degree average temperature mark was moving north in the US. Hmmm, means it might be warmer in Santa Fe..... Robert found a neat looking condo on Craigslist in Santa Fe that we wanted to look at.
We rather hurriedly loaded up the camper, joined our great friends Dennis and Barbara and John and Wanda on a camping trip to Colorado Bend State Park, then just kept on going.....
We thought we would only be gone for a couple of weeks. As it turns out we ended up staying to buy and we would miss one of our fav people, Dan's visit to Austin from San Diego area.
Seems like we had heard from Douglas Stewart on one our fun visits with him when he lived in Albuquerque that Las Vegas, New Mexico was a cool town so we went there first and spent two days driving every street and the mountains nearby. We found one place we really like but it was already sold, a rock 'hobbit' house adjacent to the university like the ones you might find in Austin.
WE drove on west through the mountains past Pecos, Glorieta, Eldorado.... Beautiful! Of all the times we have been to New Mexico don't remember coming this way.
On to old Santa Fe , a town we had spent 1 or 2 nights in many times over the years because it was expensive but one we really loved because of the architecture and setting.
We have been there a couple of times a year since we retired on our way to and fro from the park lands of the American West, always wistfully wished we could live there. Santa Fe is 12 hours or so from Austin, approximately half way to places we like in Utah, Wyoming and California.... Seemed like we were spending a lot of our life out west, soooooooo
We even have a favorite bar or two where they recognize us. We were at this fine bar making new freinds in Santa Fe! And our friend Rex Warren performs in the Santa Fe/Albuquerque area. Can't wait for you guys to come visit. Amazing how many people are saying they will come visit us in Santa Fe.....
We read where Santa Fe has been rated as the number 2 most desirable place to live in the United States, and the real estate prices show it. For the next couple of weeks we spent the days looking hard at the high priced Santa Fe real estate. Occasionally at night we would go out for dinner or drinks, or just to walk around the old town. Thats what Santa Fe is good for, promenading around and enjoying the scenery.
Lots of hiking and biking trails in town and nearby, including Hyde Memorial State park with campsites and a lodge on the road up to the ski area.
There are also many hiking in the surrounding national forest around Hyde Memorial. We were glad to be able to plug our camper in the second time we went up there because it snowed and snowed!
