| | | Portage Glacier Trip | | | | | As a surprise on my day off, Chuck has dedcided to take the day and go to Portage Glacier. The trip takes about 1 hour and as previously mentioned you wind along the Turnagain Arm to get here. The best place to see the Glacier is from Portage Lake and the Begich-Boggs Visitor Center. The Center is named after the former Alaska Senator Nick Begich and Louisiana Senator Boggs whose plane disappeared over this area in 1972. The center is only about an hour's drive from Anchorage and is in Girdwood. The center offers many exhibits and offers a film "Voices From The Ice" hourly. This is the number 1 attraction for those visiting the Anchorage area. The glacier has receded in the not too distant past and has created the Lake the center sits on as is visible with the miny icebergs floating in the lake from the Glacier. But the Burns Glacier is still visible from the center and both offer a spectacular site to see.
