A Groovy Tale
In the course of the evening, cooking dinner at Yulara, which by now everyone was getting good at…the esky was empty…our river, in need of a beer or two, just like the rest of us…dragged 8 of us off to the main resort restaurant to pick up a few slabs! Just to keep us going until the morning!
Anyway out at the resort, waiting in the queue to be served by the nice barman, Steve, the driver begins doing all the moves to the classic, John Williamson song, “The Kangaroo Song,” unfortunately the DJ spots Steve and drags a few of the other guys up in front of the audience, providing some entertainment whilst they sit back and enjoy their roast dinner!
Needless to say, Steve gets rewarded with a standing ovation for his somewhat groovy performance! So after dinner, it was time for the rest of the groover’s on the bus to be educated…now, apparently for better acoustics and undoubtedly to shield us all from the other tour groups, we all boarded the bus! From here, chaos turned into shear comedy! If only it was on video! Steve on the P.A. sand along and the rest of us, squeezed in and led the chorus whilst doing the moves to…..
“A home among the gum trees,
and the plum trees,
A sheep or two and a Kangaroo,
a clothes line out the back,
a verandah out the front and an old rocking chair!”
When the chair was rocking, the bus was bouncing; I could see the other tour groups looking on in astonishment!!!
It was a magical moment, 18 people who 4 days before were complete strangers, dancing together in the back of a Toyota Mini bus, having the time of their lives! A definite, bizarre moment from my time on the road! There’s not much to do after that but have another beer!
