And I finally got here (though it wasn't so straight-forward, naturally). From Ranong I caught a truck taxi to the Ko Payam pier on the mainland, bought a ticket, then was told I was not at the Ko Payam pier even though a large sign proclaimed it to be. The ticket guy claimed the pier was a few kilometers down the road and insisted I take a motorbike taxi (which was not included in the ticket) there because it was hard to find. This was all a bit confusing but I complied and eventually ended up on a boat bound for Ko Payam. On the boat an expat living on the island later explained that the tide was too low to use the regular pier (where I got my ticket) and that they have to use the fishing boat pier in those situations . . . but of course the people who sell the tickets don't find it important to mention any of that. But I got here and I have to say it's exactly what I've been looking for. Not many tourists, cheap bungalows, great seafood, no cars, good boogie-boarding sized waves, friendly locals, and lots of forest trails to explore. I've only been here one night, but I think I might just settle down here for the next few weeks and kick my feet up a bit. Needless to say I might be MIA on the blog updates for a while. Cheers - tanner
