More national reserves... I'm not usually into wildlife

2007-03-31, Salta, Argentina

Salta was the next destination on the list, across to the west. The city itself is engulfed by mountains and forests. We wanted to go to a nation park called El Rey to trek and camp, which looked the best around, but we left it too late to book up a trip. Instead we hiked through another cloudforest nearby, for a cloudy view of the city. Next stop was San Juan further south, to see 2 more natural reserves, I'm almost done with natural reserves honestly! We saw some huge gorges, and cycled through one of them, saw some cool rock formations. More about the west, other than nature, lots of food and drink. We found a place selling Llama meat, which was pretty nice, but may aswell have been beefsteak. The national drink, which I can't remember the name of was absolutely foul tasting, like a mixture of coke and medicine. Mate Tea, just about every Argentinian drinks, looks odd like some strange way of smoking pot, but is actually pretty good. Ate more than my fair share of empanades... why you can't find them in England I don't understand.

The fertile Valley where we saw the gorges was another isolated town, looking pretty historic. After arriving we went out with some other people in the hostel to some party, which apparently the whole population attended. More empanades, and strange drinks later we got back to the hostel at 4am to start a fire so it was possible to have a warm shower, before rising at 6am for a day trip. Thats what travellings about!

Another good time to round off Argentina before heading through the Andes to Santiago, Chile. Only a shame we hadnīt more time to see Patagonia in the south.
