Arrival in Tel Aviv

1999-01-01, Tel Aviv, Israel

I hesitated before mentionning this trip, as it was some time ago. On the other hand, I still remember it perfectly and I don't see why I shouldn't talk about it, even if I went there with my family before 1999.

The first step was Tel Aviv, before the recent tensions. The city had a definite mediterranean touch to it, with the dark blue sea and the general disposition of the city. The buildings, however, reminded me of the Middle East, especially with the soldiers in the streets. Images and stereotypes I had seen on TV as a kid. We didn't stay there long, but it gave us an overview of what was waiting, especially because of the hail storm! From the hotel window, I could see the darkness everywhere: heavy gloomy clouds, the sea as dark as lead, covered with dirty white froth... And hail falling, covering the buildings in the same dirty colour. I must say I had fun picking it up, although I feared we might be cold on our trip... as I was hoping for spicy heat and a golden sun... However, there were more surprises ahead...
