the change from argentina to bolivia was almost instant at the border. the clothes the poverty the roads etc etc. it was obvious which is the richer country. spent our first night in bolivia at a bush camp near tupiza. jason and i did a bit of an altitude hike in thongs up a loose rocky slope (wasnt worth annoying those doing truck clean to get our shoes) and got a nice view over our camp and its big red rock surroundings.
spent the next day driving through the bolivian south west gaining altitude on our way to uyuni. went for a run up a hill when we stopped at a 4000m pass and felt a bit dizzy afterwards! the road followed a river bed in places and as it had been raining a bit recently no one was sure if we would end up stuck somewhere waiting for flash floods to recede. we managed to get through ok, good fun really.
uyuni is a very touristy little town set up to access the huge salt flats nearby. has a lot of travel agents, some great pizza joints and fruit smoothie street vendors, and a shower nazi in our hotel who was knocking on the door if you exceded your 5 minute limit on your one shower allowed for the day!
the day out on the salt flats was one of my favourite days on the trip so far. the recent rain meant the flats were wet and reflections were to be had everywhere. sunset was pretty sweet too. great day trip.
