Our drive up the West Coast was wet, the entire trip. Had a quick stop at Franz Josef Glacier but it’s just another glacier – from a distance I think they are nothing – will never beat landing and walking on one. Didn’t take us too long to get up to Greymouth. Settled into our accommodation before jumping back in the car to drive further up the coast to Punakaiki to look at the Pancake Rocks. The rocks are pretty specky – layers of rocks which look like pancakes sitting on top of each other.
Cooked a pretty big tea and all ate too much so we put on the rain coats and went for a walk on the beach in the rain. Rocks and black sand – certainly not the white beaches we are use to at home!!
Without the Glacier, I don’t think I would have thought much of the west coast at all and our stop at Greymouth was simply because we needed somewhere to stay to break up the driving days.
We were soon on our way to Motueka – north of the south island. More rain, but all we were doing was driving so it didn’t matter. The drive wasn’t very scenic but perhaps we have come to expect the “wow” factor from what we have seen and experienced to date. We arrived in Motueka after just 4 hours driving and were to spend the next 2 nights here. This gives us a chance to unwind and relax a little. The man at reception was telling me about the weather. The last 2 days it has rained over the entire country and tomorrow it is suppose to become really nice again. We have, somehow, managed to plan the weather really well – or perhaps someone is looking after us – all we ask for is 1 more day of beaut weather for out kayak of Able Tasman National Park.
