Rocks. Dust. Beauty.

2007-01-05, Mount Cook, New Zealand

We drove to the Mt Cook Township, if you can call it a town, perhaps more a village. On the agenda was to do a 3 hour walk of the Hooker Valley – which would take us closer to Mt Cook. It was very dusty, rocky and dirty yet there seemed something majestic about it all. Heaps of rocks make for an interesting, annoying, tiring hike (or since I im in NZ, I should say Tramp). Crossed a couple of swing bridges, rivers, viewed some lakes – but not the stunning blue that we had been exposed to the day before, instead, a dirty cloudy grey. We ended up at Hooker Lake which Mt Cook overlooks and probably the closest to Mt Cook we will ever get – although I did notice you could do an adventure trip where you fly in and walk to the summit – crazy but could be something to do one day! Was really quite warm so by the time we got back out to the car we were knackered.

Later in the day we headed to the Tasman Valley for a short walk to Blue Lake and to see the Tasman Glacier. Didn’t stick around long as it was EXTREMELY windy and glad we had a sign to hang on to! Very similar to Hooker Valley as in it was very dusy and dirty but specky none the less. We cant help but be amazed by the mountains over here. I mean we have plenty of them at home, but they just don’t compare to the ones here – they are big, steep, rocky and have plenty of valleys. Almost feels as though you are in a movie as you drive past them.

Sat around talking for much of he night and had a pretty good laugh. We have all decided that Felicity has her own vocab and that we should come up with a Felicity word for the day. To date, words such as “Gucci”, “Jabber”, “Vial”, “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah”, and “He He He” have been frequently used. Am confident that this list will grow. Felicity seems to be overly excited about the fact she can hire a hair dryer free of charge. Ahhh… so many Felicity moments already!
