Before we came to NZ, people had told us that it is a beautiful place that is very similar to Tasmania and that we will be blown away with its beauty. We were a little worried – because Tassie is so beautiful itself. If we were to be blown away by NZ… my thoughts were to remember that Tassie is still beautiful and that it is our home!! Funny – that saying seemed to stick for the trip. Heading to Mount Cook – we were shocked that we had not yet experienced the wow factor. Sure the mountains were pretty specky and there was a bit of snow on them but nothing to yet make us think that this place was beautiful.
Then it hit us – the wow factor. We drove around a corner straight into view of a stunning blue lake with snow capped mountains in the background. Lake Tekapo with mountains such as Mt Cook in the background was just an awesome sight. Felicity was so impressed with the blueness of the water that she just had to go for a swim… and it was pretty bloody cold!! We could have actually stayed here a lot longer and admired the scenery but thought we had better keep going but not long after there was another blue lake, Lake Pukaki with more stunning mountains in the background that we just had to stop at and admire.
We finally arrived at Glentanner – 20km from Mt Cook – where we were to spend the night. From out room, we had a direct view to Mt Cook – not bad, and definitely value for money (people would pay big bucks for views like ours!!!).
Our evening was spent enjoying our dinner outside while admiring the view of Mt Cook… hard to take!!
We had a great day and just hoped that what we had seen is a sign of things to come because we have just been blown away.
Oh… our 3 has increased to 4… We picked Felicity’s friend Kate up from the airport this morning. She is joining us for just over half our trip before she goes to Kayak School!
