Now that I know my last story was uploaded I will continue with stories from the weekend. I spent Saturday walking around the city centre. One of the students in my program is a resident of Bath. He drew out a handy map for me which highlighted a nice walking map of things he thought I may miss and not know about but is worth seeing. I ended up seeing the Royal Crescent, the Circus, Royal Victoria Park and Queen's Square. For those that are not familiar with the Royal Crescent or the Circus, these are both magnificent examples of Georgian architecture. The Circus is basically a circle divided into 3 equal segments of townhouses facing inward. It's absolutely spectacular. I guess it was completed in 1768 and it was inspired by the Roman Colosseum. The Royal Crescent is a residential row of homes laid out in a crescent. This was designed by John Wood junior and his father designed the Circus. They make quite a team, it was truly breathtaking. Obviously my knowledge in architecture is lacking but not my appreciation. It was magnificent, my house in Coventry doesn't stand a chance against such beauty...haha.
I must have walked close to 8 hours but I did have time to sit on a bench or two and people watch. The pace of life seems slower here and I didn't want to take any of it for granted. You know it's something great if I can get my ADHD in check...lol. I even had lunch on a bench behind the Roman Baths. I didn't go in as I'm saving that for the next trip. Hoepfully Jessica (for my family and friends reading this, Jessica is my colleague, she and I are in the MSc program together) and I can go together. While on the bench I saw street performers and enjoyed the best salami and cheese sandwich I've ever had. Maybe it was the ambiance or maybe the cheese and deli meats are better here. For the my fellow chocolate lovers, I went to Cadbury Cocoa and had ice cream covered in chocolate and then I went to a chocolate shop (Thorton's) for more chocolate.
What else did I see, I went to Bath Abbey which was amazing and Pulteney Bridge to look at the River Avon. Here's a bit of trivia, the Pulteney Bridge is one of four bridges in the world with shops across the full span on both sides. Of course where there's shopping, there's Marie. The shopping in Bath is spectacular I couldn't resist, it was calling me. Honestly I could have spent the whole weekend shopping but I had to get my addiction in check as it's expensive here especially with the exchange rate. On to another adventure.
Take care.
Marie
