First off, I wanted to apologize - I realize it's been a while since I made an entry on my blog. But I've been quite busy with travel and school work........now it's time to start it up again though.
So, I had a reading week two weeks ago and decided it was time to finally leave Edinburgh. I started my reading week by flying from Glasgow to Brussels, Belgium. From Brussels I took a train (about 1 1/2 hours) to Antwerp - the Diamond Capital of the World - to stay with my housemate, Mark Harris, who is going to school there. I spent Friday and Saturday in Antwerp and got a good feel for the city. Belgium isn't the most exciting place in the world, but it was nice to meet up with some friends from Queen's and walk along the many streets that are lined with designer shops etc. Naturally being in Belgium we had to try the waffles and chocolate - which were way better than I thought they would be. Also, beer is pretty much cheaper than any other beverage, so we tried a few different kinds while we were there. It's actually quite funny because we typically would drink Stella Artois which is a very expensive, premium beer in Canada but in Belgium, it's actually one of the cheapest - even less than a Molson Canadian back home.
On the Sunday we travelled to Brussels which is about an hour train ride away. We stopped by at the main tourist spots which included the famous St. Michael's Cathedral and the Grote Markt (Grand Place) which is a large market in the heart of Brussels and was coincidentally the picture on the front of my Europe travel guide. Again we had waffles in Brussels which were even better than in Antwerp - easily one of the best things I've ever ate.
We returned to Antwerp for Sunday nite to prepare for the real leg of this reading week trip........Paris!!!!
