Fun and games in Surfers Paradie

2007-03-01, Gold Coast, Australia

Hello everyone. Currently in a place called surfers Paradise, which is on the gold coast. Its a thin strip of land with loads of sky scrapers and high rises. It looks a little bit like Miami. We are right in the middle where most people take there holidays in Australia, so there are loads of hotels and stuff to do. Went go karting yesterday on a massive 1km long track. It was amazingly good fun. My hands ache this morning from the death grip I had on the stirring wheel. The car is still going quite well, however Jon (chief mechanic) informs me that it has developed a mystery leak. He claims its nothing to worry about. I'm worried.

Anyway quick update of what been happening. Port Macquarie was a fairly quiet place, with a nice beach. The hostel was nice with a palm tree filled courtyard and excellent BBQ. We used it to cook a massive BBQ complete with Kangaroo steaks, washed down with four x (how Aussie are we!). We then carried on North and spent a night in Lennox head. This was a mega chilled out place full of surfers and hippies. It had a good atmosphere though. We then spent two nights at Byron bay. Byron bay is my favourite place Ive been so far. Packed with backpackers the town is quite small but packed with bars and restaurants. The beach was great (when is it not) and its meant to have the best surf in Australia. We took a walk to the top of the cliffs over looking the town and watched some of the surfers. I saw one guy ride a wave for a good minute and must of traveled a good 1km from the headland to the beach. Insane. Then we came here to Suffers (as the cool locals say). About to head to Brisbane.

Travailing with Sophie and Lauren has been fun. Despite Jon describing her as quiet before we meet, it turns out Sophie is an undercover member of the drinking police. She can often be seen late at night wondering round hostels with a bottle of saboka enforcing copious drinking by all. She even has her own catch phrase "head back". As Toby our German Dorm mate said before he fell out the top of his bunk bed (how I laughed) "that girl is evil". I cant remember what it feels like not to wake up sweaty stuck to my bed sheets feeling less than well. Ive drunk two and half litters of water this morning and still no piss. Last night went on another hostel bar crawl (every hotel seems to have them complete with party buses). Jon in a fit of self destruction claimed "Eating is for the weak" and skipped dinner. This I believe directly lead to his invention of Irish Jig dancing (despite the fact that Hip Hop and other ghetto tunes were playing). The result was terrible but fascinating, similar to a car crash. I'll hopefully put some pictures on the site this week. Anyway got to go. Good to see you safe in the middle east (is that a contradiction?) Paul. I'm stalking everyone else on Facebook. See you soon.

Next entry: A busy week
