First day on the water

Today we had two lectures. One was on sustainable development and the other on coastal management. After lunch we cleaned up trash along one of the roads in town. It's sad to see so much garbage in a place that is so beautiful. Puerto San Carlos is a small, fairly young, rural fishing community that currently does not have a waste management system. Right after trash cleanup, we went out on the pangas small boats for the first time to take our swimming test. On our way to the site of the test I saw my first whale!!! Actually there were two, a mother and her baby! The water was a little chilly at first, but once I started swimming is was comfortable-- I passed the swim test! :)

Other news:
- My luggage arrived Saturday!!!!
- We just learned which directed research project we will be working on. There were three to choose from. I got my first choice and will be working with sea turtles!!
- Class started on Monday.
- Yesterday we went to Constitucion a nearby town and got our student visa pictures taken.
