Paradise!

2007-02-06, Little Corn Island, Nicaragua

I imagine that anybody who has written a travel journal about Corn Island has titled it 'Paradise', so I'm pulling no punches in orginality here. People, people.. I can't believe that I have been to this country before and not heard about this little island. Its wonderful!! Its in the Caribean off the coast of Nica and so tiny that there are no cars. You walk everywhere. I think that the furthest points are only 1.5 KM apart. The people are so wonderful there, and the food! The food is fabulous. Seafood galore. It is so nice to end the trip with this under my belt. When I was last in Puerto Cabezas, it was necessary for Phillip, Douglas, and Joseph (now to be known as the 'boy gang') to drive the car back to Managua. This is a 24 hour trip so they planned on breaking it up by stopping by some other projects in Matagalpa, etc on their way back. Soo, I decided to runaway for a few days and fly back to Managua ;).

When I first got off the plane in Big Corn Island a hotel owner that I had met advised me to go to Little Corn Island (LCI) first and then decide from there if I wanted to go back to the big island. I didn't. You won't either. I hired a cab driver to drive me all around the big island until I had an eye full and then I hopped on the boat to the little isla. LCI has amazing diving, in which I found some friends and took to snorkeling at the dive spots. We saw nurse sharks, colorful fish that I could point out in a marine life book, star fish, grouper, trigger fish, parrot fish, barracuda, and lots of beautiful coral. I was supposed to come back to Managua yesterday. Yeah... no. So I played hookie with my plane last night only to find out at 6am this morning that this mornings flight was booked. So I paid off a guy (that was a friend of a friend style) to get a seat for me (weee, I am wheeling and dealing honey's). I made some great connections for Suni Solar and spoke with the hotels there about having solar installed. I stayed at Gracies the first night, which is one of the cheapy cabana's on the island, but you have your own private bath and shower with running water (which is truly not to be taken for granted) and its right on the beach. I highly recommend it. Last night I stayed at Casa Iguana after making friends with the current manager, which is a beautiful place. It sits on a cliff overlooking the ocean and is surrounded with gardens that they make all their food from. Its more expensive for less of a room, however!, the ammenities are much nicer and dinner is a sit down family style dinner so it was an excellent opportunity to meet some wonderful travelers. This island was full of backpackers, so its not the culture experience of the natives, so to speak, but I highly, highly recommend that you go there. Yes, you!

Next entry: Back to work at the factory!
