After a nice breakfast of cereal and coffee (I am really learning to love coffee) one of the guys who was in my room asked me if I wanted to go out and explore the city with him. I told him I was feeling really broke, but I was bored and I remembered that at most museums I could just charge the entry fee to my credit card. After walking around downtown we turned south and crossed the river and found a little Chinese place for lunch. The menus were completely in German so I had no clue what I was actually ordering; I just picked one that I thought sounded good. The food was good, but we had to eat it standing up outside, though it was nice and cool and a pleasant spot so I didn’t mind. After lunch we walked east to the Film and Photo Museum. It wasn’t bad, not a place I would have went to on my own but my friend was into that kind of thing. They had some great old videos of Amos and Andy that were hilarious. After that we walked west along the Main river (there are actually 2 Frankfurt’s in Germany and the big Frankfurt everyone knows about is actually known as Frankfurt am Main, meaning Frankfurt on the Main River.) to the Stadelsches Kunstintut. This museum is Frankfurt’s premiere art museum that covers from antiquity to modern. It was a surprisingly great museum with a good collection of pieces from many diverse periods. I normally dislike modern art but they had some “transitional” modern pieces and impressionist paintings that were fantastic. It was refreshing to see some newer stuff after all the old dusty paintings I had seen. All in all it was the last museum I would see on this trip and it was a good one. After the museum closed I exited out onto the street to a beautiful German evening, the sun was still high in the western sky but many of the citizens of Frankfurt were down on the banks of the river walking, and sunning. I crossed a real nice pedestrian bridge and headed back towards downtown.

Back at the hostel I got a cheap slice of pizza and a coke for dinner; I had to pay with some of my precious cash that I had little of ( I think I had about 12 euro left). That evening I filled out my journal and then went and set in the commons room with a big group of people. We sat by a big picture window drinking cheap but good German beer that cost 1 euro apiece, a cool night breeze blew in and we could here the sounds of the street and the train station outside. The group of people were mostly Australian, with a few Canadians and Californians. I only had to buy about one beer myself and the guys at the table bought me the rest. That night was to be my last night in Europe, after six months it seemed a little sad, like the end of a wonderful thing, but I was very anxious to get home. As it was getting late I said goodnight to everyone and taking one look back at all those happy chattering aussies telling traveling stories around a table of empty, peeled-label bottles, I smiled and went to bed.
