Bus Ride to Chang Rai and the CGT

2007-01-05, Mae Suai, Thailand

Hello everyone,

It has only been a few days since our last update, but a whole lot has happened in such a little time. We left the YWAM Bangkok base at 5AM on Thursday morning and headed for the bus station where we picked up a nice air conditioned bus up to Chang Rai. Quick side note: things here are very cheap, most Thai restaurants are only 30-50 baht ($1-$1.50) for a full meal and the 10 hour bus ride up here cost only about $18 including breakfast and lunch, it's amazing how far a few bucks can go. So any way, back to our adventure...

When we arrived in Chang Rai (the northern most province in Thailand), we realized that our ride wasn't there yet and that we really didn't know exactly who was picking us up or precisely when. We also realized that we had left our guitar on the luggage rack on the bus and that it had jetted out shortly after we got off. After we finished freaking out, we decided to have the girls wait inside the bus terminal waiting for our ride while the guys scoured the bus lot for our bus (which we had forgoten the number of and didn't really remember what it looked like). A Thai boy thankfully asked us what we were looking for on about our fifth lap around the parking lot and he was able to give us directions to the tour companie's office only about 150 meters down the road.

Soon after that, we were picked up by our ride from the CGT, a man named Daniel from Sweden (the kids think that it is really funny that there are two Daniels now and so they call us Daniel 1 and Daniel 2 and like to see if we will both respond when they yell out our name, it's cute). He took us to the bus office and (thank God) they had held onto our guitar and we were able to reclaim it. I also thank God for the Thai taxi drivers who were nice enough to tell us about the office. After that lovely endeavor, we jumped in the back of a pick-up truck and traveled about an hour to the CGT center and after unloading our bag, quickly fell asleep.

(I'm trying to keep these stories a bit more bite size so that I don't overwhelm anyone, so check out the next story about the first few days with the Akha children)
