I love America!

Work has been...well actually there's been no work to speak of.

Yesterday I went to the school in Teshie and the WWOOF director, an enthusiastic Teshie-native with a markedly British accent, greated me with a quick tour of his school. In the spirit of building from the ground up, the Annemarie School has only one of two stories completed. At ground level the bustle of 750 students in yellow and brown uniforms resembles a hive of bees, but above them lies exposed wire supports, cement staircases leading to nowhere and a hodgepodge of errant cinderblocks begging to be put to use.

Soon thereafter 6 of us crammed into a taxi, owned by the Ken, the WWOOF director, and operated by one of his 48 employees through the impossibly decrepit backroads of Teshie. We arrived at the cozy but modern abode of Ken and his brother of 18, Richie, where they are putting up Niklas, a German volunteer, and myself. Ken told me to rest (as if I had not been doing this for the past 4 days) and quickly left to take care of some business with Richie. Niklas then ran off to see his friend, also volunteer in greater Accra via separate means.

Outside I read. Inside I napped. And four hours later Ken and Rich collected me and we headed out for a bite to eat downtown. Ken, a man of 28, is a self-professed world traveller. He's been to Texas 4 times this past year alone, as well as an extended stay in Virginia. In about a week he will head out to Germany and Rich will presumably be in charge.

At dinner we discussed Ghana and America, with the conversation regularly leading back to the point that Ken loves America and wishes an American woman, other than the 58 year old obese Texan that has grown so fond of him, would love and marry him so taht he could live there. So far for Ken, no luck, but for me SUCCESS! I have found WWOOF and the hosts and the accommodations are nice (King of the Castle, King of the Castle).

Today I tried out the sometimes stiffling tro-tro system with Nathan to extend our visas. This, as well, was SUCCESS!

Tomorrow I will work at the school and Niklas will head off to his first farm, but do not dispair, as another German will be arriving Friday.

Until then, keep your chin up and your nose down.
