A parade and, finally, Parc Guell

2003-01-17, Barcelona, Spain

We had somewhat of a late start, after the previous night’s antics, then had bollerías and café for breakfast at Bocatta on Las Ramblas. After walking down through Port Vell again, we came upon a small parade near the main Correos. Lots of horses and horn players were wheeling down the street and throwing caramelos in their wake, which bystanders scavenged for. Only in Spain!

After a hearty and cheap (€ 6) menú del día, we headed back to our hostel for a siesta, in order to recoup somewhat from our envelada the previous night, which was still getting us down.

Once I awoke, I caught the Metro up to Parc Güell to see that master work of Gaudí’s. It was truly an impressive sight, and the height of the park also offered impressive vistas of Barcelona beneath, including the incomplete La Sagrada Familia Cathedral. Granted, one had to negotiate a lengthy serious of escalators (most of which were not running) up the mountainside to get there, but it was well worth the effort.

In the evening, we took it relatively easy, just walking the streets after a dinner of falafel, and stopping in at a tapas bar to finish off the night. This was on Paseo de Gracia, directly across from the fully illuminated Casa Batlló, which is a really magnificent sight at night.
