After a fairly late morning, I cooked up an Irish fry for breakfast, then we wandered around the town a bit. After lunchtime, Tom and I went to a nice little audio-visual in Selskar Abbey, documenting the history of Wexford town and county. It was an impressive jaunt through the influences, from the Vikings and Normans, down through the times of Cromwell and the late the famine, on to the present day. Then, we walked the 4 km out to Ferrycarrig on the old Enniscorthy/Dublin road. Taking in the view and ascending the steps to the old Norman tower, we stopped in at the Oak Tavern for a pint, then headed back to Wexford, past the Irish National Heritage Park and Barntown. On foot, there was an impressive view of the Slaney river looking inland towards the Blackstairs mountains, and then another one looking downhill on the town and out to the estuary. There is also significant development of Pairc Loch Garman, the Gaelic playing fields on the outskirts of town up near the hospital.
Cooked dinner at Gran’s house, then headed out to Screen in the evening, to see Margaret and Ibar. Patrick was away at uni in Limerick, and Ciarán was at the national Young Scientist’s competition in Dublin, but young Ibar was there. We headed out to their local, Freddie’s, where Ellen and I had gone back in 2000, not long after it opened. It was quite a lot more crowded this time around, with a darts competition going on. But we had a good chat, then headed back to Ballyhoo for tea and sandwiches in the madrugada, before returning into Wexford town and settling down for the night.
