Installation art by Susie Mac Murray is on display at York St. Mary’s running 16 June – 29 October 2006. *visited by my art society* There is more to this...but I will share on my return. I want you to view and experience your own response without any input from me...what do you think of the installation???

Echo is the latest intervention specially commissioned for York St. Mary’s the city’s leading contemporary art venue. This site-specific installation is by Susie Mac Murray, one of Britain’s’ emerging contemporary artist.

She was commissioned to respond creatively to the interior of this beautiful medieval deconsecrated church. This is the second of yearly commissions by contemporary artist to transform the space.

This evocative piece is the latest work by Susie following on from success which includes Flocks at Manchester Art Gallery, being short listed for the 2005 Jerwood drawing prize and international shows in France and Italy.

The materials chosen for this installation are hairnets and the discarded rosin covered horsehair from violin bows, Hairnets were chosen for their delicate nature and their metaphorical connection to the human body. The violin bow hair was chosen because of its former role in the intense and emotive human experience of making music.

‘’As a place of worship that has existed for nearly a millennium, St. Mary’s contains a wealth of history built up over the centuries. Archaeological and social histories can be pieced together by sifting and extrapolation, but intangible and equally significant things will also have take place there. Untraceable sounds, experiences and emotions that science cannot pin down will have existed in the space and a kid of ephemeral essence remains. Eco is a response to St. Mary’s as a kind of vessel for the traces of profound contemplation, sound, memory, history and human faith’ ~Susan MacMurray
