A major rise in costs as we reach Jordan - about 4 times more than Syria. But the sights here are truely spectacular and worth every penny.
We free camped the first night on Mount Nebo where Moses was laid to rest overlooking the biblical Promised Lands. We ate and drank around the camp fire admiring the lights from the cities of Bethleham and Jerusalam and slept in the open under the stars. Started the next day with a bath in the Dead Sea - 400 metres below sea level - and about the only place you can comfortably read the paper laying on your back without getting wet! Very cool place and a must do for everyone.
Olse, Chinny and I met a local Bedowin resident of Petra - half kiwi in fact! His kiwi mother came to visit the lost city in 1979 and ended up marrying a local Bedowin, had 3 kids and has been living there ever since. She`s even met the Queen, Bill Clinton, and many other international dignataries and recently released a book of her life `Married to a Bedowin`. Petra itself is amazing - massive temples, tombs and buildings carved entirely out of the cliff rock. We walked and climbed all over, visiting the monastry and numerous look outs high above the city. Exhausting but thrilling day.
Onto Lawrence of Arabia`s stomping ground - Wadi Rum. Absolutely amazing landscape and one of my highlights. Explored on 4WD and by foot, climbing up to L of A`s spring, huge sand dunes and natural bridges and gorges before watching the sun settle over the land - beautiful. Free camped our last night in Jordan on a mud flat in the middle of no where under the stars.
