I flew from Hanoi to Kuala Lumpur to Singapore so I arrived late at night and went in search of an inexpensive place to stay. I ended up staying in little India near the city center. After a good nights rest I explored Little India, China Town, and the Boat Quay. I had a wonderful dinner at an Indian restaurant recommended by one of my father’s students. It was located on the waterfront, after dinner I went up on the third floor and saw an Indian band and dancers it was great! I only had two days in Singapore, on the second day I took a cable car that runs right through the world trade center towers to a mountain top and then back to Sentosa Island. This island, barely off the Singapore coastline, is where the locals take their vacations. The island has many features that are similar to Disneyland including fountains, cheesy cement sculptures, free monorail, railways, and buses so I explored all of the different beaches and mountaintops. I went on a hike through the forest on a “nature” trail complete with fake dragon heads, colorful cement mushrooms, and fake dinosaur bones. People played volleyball on the beaches with a surreal backdrop of hundreds of huge container ships out in the sea. Singapore is the busiest port in the world. In the evening I watched a water show with animated fountains, mist screens and lasers set to music it was fantastic. The audience was packed and there were only three westerners. I took the last cable car back to Singapore; they light the cable cars with Christmas lights and all of the lights of the city twinkle below.
When I first started my trip in Fiji… I kept meeting people that were at the end of their long trip and on their way home. They talked about going home and I was so happy that my trip was just beginning. Now I tell people that I am going home…. I could not believe that the time had gone so quickly. I’m anxious to see my friends and family but I don’t feel ready for the real world yet.
