After Kakadu, Sue and I rented a car again and drive to Katherine where we planned to spend the night before taking a boat trip on Katherine Gorge the next day. We were very excited because we read that Katherine was another town with a lot of Aboriginal culture. Well, maybe in the dry season! We were bored to death in Katherine! Everything was closed by the time we got there and we could only find two restaurants that were open for dinner!
But it was all worth it to see the gorge. It was absolutely beautiful. We took a boat trip that went into the gorge and we made couple of stops at waterfalls and had another great waterfall swim here.
It was supposed to be the rainy season in the Northern Territory where Kakadu and KAtherine both are), but, lucky for us, it did not rain a drop until we were finished with all of our activities! We did, however, drive through a torrential downpour on our way home from Katherine. The drive was a bit stressful because we were trying to avoid driving at dusk because we had heard that hitting kangaroos is very common and they tend to come out at dusk. So first we were contending with the rain, and then the rain put us behind schedule (there were times I was driving about 30 k/hr because I could not see the road), so right when it stopped, it was dusk! Anyone who knows me can only imagine what would happen if I hit a "roo"! But, all was fine and we made it back without incident.
Arriving back in Darwin was the end of Sue and Speck's adventure. We were up at 4:30 am the next day for a flight to Melbourne where I had a day of good food and the last of my modern conveniences at her friend Amy's house.
After a nice 24 hours in Melbourne, it was off to the airport again -- destination: Bangkok!
