Day One:
After a great nights sleep on the ferry, we docked at Santorini port and got lost in the crowd as the people made their way to their destinations.
As we proceeded to locate the bus to Perrisa beach it turned out there was a half hour wait.
Being the patient people that we are we made a bee-line to a fella holding a Camping Santorini sign. We jumped on the free camp bus and headed to the campsite which was 500mtrs from Firas town square.
After checking in we found a great spot for our tent, (which we bought of the net in London for 24 quid). The tent went up without a hitch (for the first time putting it up).
Our campsite had a bar, resteraunt and great pool which we made use of many times a day.
After a bite to eat in the resteraunt we walked to Fira town and spent the afternoon exploring the maze of alleyways and manouvered our way down 600 stairs around the donkeys (and their poo) to the old port.
As it was a scorcher of a day, we caught a donkey back up!
As soon as we jumped on the donkeys they were off like the clappers. Slipping and sliding with no regard for their human passengers, as they rammed our legs into the walls.
Fi's was the charge donkey that used dirty tactics to ensure its lead. These included zigzagging and cutting off Matts donkey, who had made a fine attempt to take first place by climbing from 5th to 2nd.
After to treating our skint asses to a cold brew in a prime real estate, cliff edge bar, we headed to the supermarket to purchase more beer after getting the taste for it! (90 cents a 500ml beer compared to the 4.50 we paid in the bar for 330mls! We were WELL IMPRESSED! Thank god our trip wont be a dry one!)
Day Two:
Waking from a well deserved lie in, we spent time poolside sunbathing and swimming.
Being the domesticated people we are we pinched some washing powder and hand washed our wares (Im sure we wont keep this up for long and our personal hygiene will take a dive, or we will have dumped alot of our clothes along the way to lighten our load, Fi has already taken the lead on this!!!)
After the domestic duties were completed we jumped on a bus to Oia.
Arriving in Oia we wandered around checking out the amazing views and awesome buildings perched on the edges of the cliff tops (Caldera).
We made our way to the Castle walls to secure our positions for the world famous Oia sunset, waiting in anticipation for 2 and a 1/2 hours.
Finally the sun dropped to cheers from the hoards of tourists.
Back in Fira we stopped in our new favourite shop (the supermarket) to purchase more beer. We sat at the campsite playing cards and enjoying the brews.
Fi: matt cheats at cards : )
Day Three:
Up with the birds, another great sleep on our 2.5cm self inflatting airmatresses, we jumped on a bus to Perrisa beach.
Thank god we didnt camp there!
After a dip in the pebbly beached sea, we caught a bus back to Fira half an hour later (there is a reason why Satorini isnt renowned for its beaches!)
Back at the campsite we decided we hadnt experienced Oia to the full, so we headed back to spend the afternoon meandering about, taking loads of photos, and enjoying a well deserved ice cream.
Oia is gorgeous, it over looks the sparkling blue ocean, and it is exactly what you would expect from the postcards, with its white buildings and blue domes.
Back in the campsite, another dip was required to cool off from another successful days sightseeing.
Once again back to the supermarket we headed for our days rationing of beer. We have come to the realisation that to sleep on a 2.5cm mattress with no pillows you need to be half cut! And its a great excuse to have a few drinks : )
We are glad that we chose Santorini as our first stop, we've had a great time, and it has been a great way to ease ourselves into the greek lifestyle. Roll on Milos!
