Adopt a Highway

2006-07-05, On the Road, United States

Previous | All | Next

We drove 3000 miles around California, Nevada and Arizona which gave us ample opportunity to see the "adopt a highway" notices which are posted every couple of miles along many of the roadsides. Under this system groups or individuals undertake to remove litter from the roadsides. It isn't clear whether they come along themselves from time to time or whether they pay for someone else to do it. Just outside Yosemite there was a stretch of road for which the signs announced the litter-removal sponsors were the Deerholme Guinea Pig and Rabbit Sanctuary; we enjoyed the image of all the little orphan rodents hopping about on the verges picking up litter.

On the road from June Lake to Mono Lake the sign announced that road-cleaning was sponsored by "One of those June Lake Liberals". The word "Liberals" had been crossed out and replaced with "Commies".

Next entry: Cannery Row to Big Sur
