My uninvited guest

Well I just had an interesting morning!

I made some delicious looking guacamole this morning with the largest and cheapest avocado I’ve ever seen! Caught up in the excitement of tasting my creation I almost didn’t notice that someone had already been enjoying my pitas one little nibble at a time! As I reached into the bag to break off a piece of bread it began to register! I live alone. And I know I wouldn’t nibble through a plastic bag! I immediately recalled a conversation I had with Travis and Elisha about the former rat problem in this very apartment. I slowly put two and two together and realized that a RAT had eaten dinner in my kitchen! Now I can hold my own when it comes to bugs. I mean, I had an encounter with a tarantula just two days ago! I can handle pretty much any creepy crawly thing that comes my way! but a RAT! in my apartment!! That’s more than this girl can handle!

My first thought was “At least I didn’t see it!”. My second thought was “Oh, shoot! That means it must still be in here!” And so, my day officially began. I cleaned every nook and cranny of this apartment today, on edge the whole time. With every thing I picked up came the fear of what might be behind, inside, on top or beside it!

My fears were realized when I picked up a box of chalk! I screamed as this thing came flying towards me! I closed my eyes thinking the worst! When I finally got the courage to open my eyes (I’m not sure if I was still screaming at this point. It’s all a big horrible blur!) I looked down and saw the smallest lizard I’ve ever seen! I flicked him off and sat down. WOW! So this is what being a missionary is all about! They don’t tell you about the rats, lizards and tarantulas in the brochures.

So how have I grown in my first week here in Haiti? I’ve come to accept that I share my home with about sixty five thousand ants, gnats, beetles, flies, weird shaped hornet type insects, lizards and tarantulas. If I can live with that, I guess I can live with a rat!

It’s all part of the experience...right?!?

I’ve been getting a few emails about a tropical storm on it’s way through Haiti. It’s been quite stormy here, but nothing to worry about. We’re located right next to the mountains so we just get the leftovers of the storms that come through. Nothing to worry about!

Until next time, peace, love and good food!

Rachel
