"I recommend a husband."

2006-08-20, Naxos, Greece

Note of interest: They are playing Carla Bruni's CD at the internet cafe I'm in right now.

So yesterday I went to Apollo, a village on the northern end of Naxos. It took two hours to get there by bus, even though it was only 40 km away at the very most. We just had to take a roundabout way on very narrow roads and in very mountainous country. I'm glad I took that ride because that way I've seen the villages on the inside of the island without having to visit them, because frankly they look kind of boring. Anyway.

So I got to the village and settled myself on the beach there. It was small but very nice. It was mostly Greek families, and I felt sort of like an intruder. I hate having that feeling. Anyway. So then I got hungry and went to a restaurant right there on the beach. My waiter was pretty damn cute, and that's always a plus. He had these big brown eyes that made him look so sweet and innocent...yeah, not so much. Anyway, I couldn't quite decide what I wanted, so when he came to take my order, the conversation went like this:
me: Hmm...I can't decide what I want. What do you recommend?
him: Are you married?
me: What?
him: Are you married?
me: No...
him: I recommend a husband.

Well then. I just kinda laughed nervously and asked, "Ok, but what about food?" I ended up getting the little fishes that they fry and you eat whole. And I ate them, head, tail, scales and all. They actually had a *lot* of meat and were quite yummy. Anyway, the waiter asked where I was from at some point, and then when I asked for my check he said no, that he wanted to talk. So I just kinda sat there like...ok, whatever. Anyway, he told me I had to stay in Apollo for one day, and I said I was staying for a few more hours. He said, "No, stay the whole day, stay the night, I have an extra room." I laughed nervously and said "no, no, I have to go back." I was going to go back on the 3:30 bus but he convinced me to stay until the 5:30 bus. He wanted me to just sit there in the restaurant and wait to talk to him when he wasn't busy, but I was like...no thanks buddy, and I went on the beach and laid out in the sun and went swimming, etc etc. Around 5, I went back there to have something to drink, and he said "Where are you going? Don't go."
"I'm taking the bus in half an hour but first I'm having something to drink."
"No, no, don't go, don't take the bus. Stay here, stay the night with me."

I couldn't believe the guy was actually trying this! I mean, how many other women has he said that to? And how many women have *actually* spent the night with him? Think about it. I could have indulged in every middle aged (and let's face it, not so middle-aged) woman's fantasy: Spend the night with a hot Greek man from some village on the sea.
Crazy.
It was funny though because once we started talking and I kept on talking about how much I love school and studying (a good way to see if a guy is worth anything), he seemed to lose interest. Then he told me that he speaks 8 or 9 different languages, and then we spoke in French together. And then my bus came.

So yeah. I can't even begin to comment on this whole thing. But the lesson here is: Men are the same everywhere.

Not that all men are the same.

Just that, they are good guys, and bad guys, and desperate guys, and guys who try to be slick and use their foreign charms to seduce you into bed after a matter of minutes......there are all these guys in every corner of the world.

Next entry: Concert and islands
