South Africa - Kariega - Week Four

2006-08-19, Kenton, South Africa

This is going to have to be short and sweet, not only because I broke my collar bone on thursday (will explain in a second)so my typing is painfully slow - thankfully still righthanded or I'd be broke before I finished a sentence - but also because I can't remember all that much before Thursday.

Ah yes, thursday - rather eventful day I must say.. Managed to get my results on GPRS on my phone (Mrs Breeze emailed them to me), I was SO relieved you have no idea. I have a well developed hatred of results days 1) because they are so damn stressful and 2) because we were playing touch rugby on the beach (which is so incredibly beautiful), was running for a touch down and the dog Thandi (tan-dee)tripped me up. Landed hard on my left shoulder and heard the most disgusting crack. On the plus side I scored a try.

All the doctors here close at 5o'clock, there are two here in Kenton, one was closed the other was packed with people dieing of appendicitis. Helena tried to get an appointment in Grahamstown before the end of the day but by the time we'd picked everyone up we couldn't make it in time. Went to the pharmacy and they were lovely, gave me a sling and some nice strong painkillers (unfortunately not opiate based..)

Anyhow, so didn't manage to get to a dr but we got to go to Kariega Lodge for dinner (we supposed to go once a week but the staff were all on strike). It's quite cushy and having eaten home made concoctions for the past two weeks the food there was to die for. Decided alcohol would help ease the pain..

Went to Grahamstown in the morning with Andrew, the others were doing field skills survival - which involves learning which plants you can eat if you're lost in the bush and how to make fire with limited supply of matches. Saw dr, went to xray clinic, had xray - the lady did a proper grimace when she saw it (kinda the same one people do when they find out you have g.fever - with a little less of the 'stay away from me cootie girl') Went back to dr who jabbed me in the behind with some painkiller, made my left buttock go numb..

Anyhow so thats all the drama. On Monday we got charged by a lioness, that was scary - they are so intimidating!! Ironic that they think WE are the super predators. At some point the male lions were hanging around the student house - couple of metres from the fence line - Annette&I went to check them out but we couldn't see them. There were two ranger vehicles w. guests hanging around who told us later that the lions heard us laughing and charged the fence, well WE didn't see them.

Twas raining one afteroon and we made small animal traps, which are old plastic drainpipes cut small with a barrier at one end. We had to put the doors on - had to cut them out of tin ben a hinge into them, make holes in the drainpipe and thread wire through making sure they don't get caught when they swing.

Oh yes, and something you guys will appreciate - quite early on I earned myself the name 'GrootBek' (not phonetic) which means 'big mouth' in Afrikaans because I ask to many questions.. So much for short and sweet ey.. no more photos yet as I haven't nicked them off Marion and Annette but there will be more. Miss you guys.. hope you were all happy on Thursday, will see you soon. xxxxxxxx
