I should have written about Vietnam from the start of my trip, but I’ve been having so much fun that I just haven’t had time. I’ve now begun the second week of my trip, though it feels much longer. Most of my time has been spent in Hai Phong city. I’ve been told by many people that Hai-Phong is a laid back city, but it seems that they haven’t been to the center. Many people here are amazed by the degree of my whiteness. Earlier today a man, on the street, squeezed my arm twice and said “Chung!” (“White!”), as if to make sure that I was real. I don’t think foreigners come to this city often. I think for many I’m the first foreigner they’ve seen. Many children, even some adults, shout out “Tay…Tay!” (“Foreigner…Foreigner!”), when they see me scoot past by them on the moped. It was a bit difficult adjusting at first, but Le’s family has welcomed me as one of their own. I’ve forced myself to learn some Vietnamese for I don’t want them remembering my as a quite and reserved person. The children although very fun can tire me out sometimes. I’m new and like to joke around, so they seem to want to be with my all the time. I’ve met most of Le’s family and one person that has really drawn me in is “Ong wai” (grandfather on her moms side). He’s 91 and livelier than most people. He once told me that if he were a woman he’d fall in love with me. I’ve experienced so much in such a short period of time. I want to tell you all about it, but no time at the moment… Want to experience more!
