Crete: land of the Mediterranean sun and Mediterranean time. I’m working on relaxing and chilling out - or 'chill-axing' as Keia would say, trying to realize that there’s really nothing that I have to get done today, no matter how urgent grocery shopping or tanning seems to be.
David and I finally met up with Adam and Keia, having survived a crazy-long ferry, a night sleeping at the ferry terminal, and a 4 hour bus ride. We stayed in Rethymno, one of Crete’s cities on the northern coast, for about 3 days before packing up our stuff (and we have a LOT of it!) and moving onto our next town. Rethymno was a cute, but very touristy city. I had a good time shopping (I only bought a few things!) and swimming at the beach. Other than that, there really wasn’t much else to do. Adam had a couple crazy adventures with this crap piece of metal with a motor that he called a ‘moped,’ but his wounds are healing up nicely. We had a great time cooking dinners (pasta, pasta, and pasta – no matter how Mexican Keia and David look, they must have an Italian in their line somewhere) and catching up.
So I’m now staying in Kasteli - also called Kissamos – a little town on the far northwestern corner of the Greek isle of Crete. It’s an tiny, tiny little town (almost as small as Oxford, NZ for you YWAMers reading this) that is the perfect place to recover from outreach. The foursome of us, David, Adam, Keia, and me, are settling in quite well. God provided a very cheap and beautiful apartment flat that's right on the ocean and fits our every need. If I look out our window, past our porch, I can see the ocean right there and its noise can be heard all day long. It’s incredible! I wake up every morning and I still can’t believe that I’m living in such an amazing place!
We’re such a little family now! We spend our days at the beach, grocery shopping, playing cards, reading the Bible and praying together, talking, and walking on the waterfront. We’re even cooking (there isn’t a microwave, so that cuts out the microwave-cooked food group) and cleaning! My mom would be so proud.
Our contact here is Dimitra, who is an amazing girl. She's been such a blessing to us. She helped us find our apartment, is teaching us Greek, and cooked dinner for us tonight (we weren't doing too well on our own). The other day she took us to this AMAZING beach - Falassarna beach on the west coast of Crete! The water was so clear and beautiful and stretched out in all directions. I have to say it's most definitely the best beach that I've been too...
As much as we're enjoying Crete, we're beginning to think about moving on. Who know where we'll head next!
