Hello there,
So on our last night in Nairobi we went out to a bar/resturant with the two girls from london and the lady we are staying with (who turns out to be 26). We met her 'almost' boyfriend and we went out on the highway to catch a mutatu. Mutatus are these little minibuses that are 14 passenger 15 year old vans that are falling apart. and there are thousands of them. and anyway, they're a little crazy. So there we are, standing on the side of a kenyan highway worrying about being eaten by hyenas when a mutatu pulls up with a complete set of strobe lights and black light trim. there is a mega sound system inside blaring hard core hip hop and a music video playing on a screen in the front. Tupac is written on the sides and Fuck Biggy is written on the back and there are about 25 people inside. It was the most surreal experince of my life:).
the next day lauren and I went to our placement, in Upendo childrens home. There are 30 girls there that are some of the happiest girls ive met. They laugh at nearly anything (well i am pretty funny though). and love the toys we broght them. There is no running water and we get all of our water from a well on the compond, and there is solar electricity...sometimes. but it is pretty cool. there is a class room for nusery school and first grade whcih doubles as a dining room and a class room for the older girls. besides that htere is our room, an semi-outdoor kitchen and one bedroom. they have chickens and very noisy roosters as well as rabbits (which dissapear before dinner sometimes...) and 2 cows and 2 bulls.
We are teaching PE and arts and crafts. It is fun but we are running out of Ideas that we can use when there are very limitted supplies (we have two soccer balls and two jump ropes. so please write back with ideas for PE, games and such.
The cafe is closing so i have to go. ill write more as soon as i can
