CANILLAS:
In the Dominican Republic, people with very skinny legs are referred to as "canillues" which means "a person with very skinny legs." Although I am one of those people, I am embarrassed to admit that I do not know where this word stems from. I would imagine it comes from the root word "cane." I believe many people in India would be considered to be "canillues." They are almost stick like legs that can't be seen from afar. In Chicago, I rarely wear shorts because I don't want to be called "chicken legs" or "straw." Here, I don't worry about being called these names for two reasons. One is that I blend in quite well. This leads us to my second reason. Usually, what leads people to laugh at others are people's differences i.e. homosexuals, the physically and mentally disabled, minorities, etc. I catch myself staring at people who are different. There was a man with a net on his beard in Kuwait and I couldn't stop staring. In South India, people stare but I don't believe it would be easy for them to enjoy making fun of people. They are very humble. I like that!
This morning, after my painful Kathakali lesson with Narayanan. The fact that I went to a Kathakali show (it was ok but one of the artists was actually very boring and mediocre) and came back late didn't help. I only slept a few hours because I have to wake up at four every morning.
I ate Coconut Chutney and believe I now know how to prepare it. It is quite simple. I believe all you do is add mustard seeds to coconut milk and add curry. Yummy! Narayanan tells me that Kerala is made out of coconut. It is added to everything! It's also quite healthy. I also want to learn to cook Mango Chutney and a dish called Samba which is mixed vegetables including peppers and fruit.. Puliinji is a breaded wheat dish that is used to dip into the sauces. It is delicious!
Tonight, I will take part in a wedding dinner. I am excited about this because I have always heard that Indian weddings are beautiful. I will only be attending the feast though. I don't know how much I will get to experience.
