Sunday the 31st was spent at the Royal Brunei Golf Club with Gill and her dad. That was the first time I 'graduated' from the driving range and into the greens...and boy! Do I suck at it first time around. Big difference playing on the fairway. I held up the group behind us, it was embarassing. Decided after the 4th that I'd just watch Gill and her dad play.
The next day we packed ourselves into th 4WD and headed up North-East towards the border. Although much better than the roads I remember back in 1988, travelling by road through 6 checkpoints from Brunei at Kuala Lurah into Sarawak, then back into Brunei through Puni before out into Sabah at Labu was cool. Have never had my passport stamped so many times in a day!
We drove through remote jungles and crossed rivers through ferries (very unlike the huge ferries of Penang!). Participated in very interesting purchase of 'duty free' cigarettes at the border leaving Brunei LOL.
We reached Kota Kinabalu by late afternoon, and stopped by at Gill's relatives before heading to the hotel for a week's worth of meetings.
