All My People,

It’s me again! This is the second update I’ve done on time and in the airport! We are delayed again for 2 hours on out flight to St Lucia, which is going via Barbados!?! Remind me never to fly Liat again!

So we reached Grenada at 10pm (we stayed at the Grenada Grand Hotel on Grand Anse beach, http://www.grenadagrand.com/) after having to fly from Antigua via St Vincent and being told the our flight was delayed from 4.30pm take off to 6.30pm (we actually took off at 7 pm), which meant, by the time we got to the Spice Island it was dark and we had in theory lost one afternoon of exploring. Being that we were not in Grenada for very long we where a bit annoyed but so it go.

While in Grenada we relax by the pool and on the beach (as you do), but we did in our short time take in an island tour. Well we did it renegade style really as the organized tours where like $200 USD!! We was originally going to hire a car $65 USD for the day (very reasonable) but then came to catch, the excess for the day was $3000 USD – yes you read it correctly $3000 USD. After laughing for a few minutes the lady in the hire centre said she new a taxi driver that would take us, so she introduced us to Roy.

After a quick discussion with Roy about what we wanted and what it would cost us, we headed out in our comfortable air-conditioned car around the island fro $160 ECD. As Roy drove us around, he explained the sites, historical and cultural events, that where relevant to the area, as well as stopping so we could take pictures.

After a coastal drive we arrived at the Concord Waterfalls. More info as usual click the link below:

Whilst on the way to the waterfalls, Roy got us to try a local fruit called French cashew or the Malay apple. This was kindly picked for us by Roy (well actually he stole it off a tree! (See the pictures) For more info click the link.

We didn’t spend long at the waterfalls and as we already have climbed a 200ft Dunn’s River Falls in Jamaica, it made the Concord small. But while up there we did purchase some spices and candles, all which are produced in Grenada.

The Nutmeg Processing Stations/Nutmeg factories are well worth a visit. There are two main ones on the island, located in Gouyave and Grenville, and they send their product all over the world, for use in cooking and confectionary. Although about three quarters of the nutmeg trees were destroyed, the factories have plenty of stock that they can process, so the factories are still working. Fact: did you know Grenada produced 1/3 of the world’s Nutmeg supplies? The rest comes from Indonesia.

Next stop was, Dougaldston Spice Estate, inland just south of the fishing village Gouyave. A traditional, still working plantation estate where you will see Grenada’s various spices processed using traditional methods, including cocoa beans laid out on the drying trays. Roy also bought us Mango from here (I’m starting to like him - getting us treats every where we stopped).

Back on the road and we went up to the fishing village Gouyave. This was so we could stop for a bite to eat before the journey back to the hotel. We ate at little local place called Kelly’s Hot Spot, it was very inexpensive. Fresh fish and chips served its also very popular with locals, but on walking in it was full of tourist too, so it must have been the place to eat. After scoffing down a Roti and fruit punch we decided to head back home (a new route), for a much-needed swim in the pool and a pre night-out nap.

For our one and only night out we went up the bar at the hotel called the Flamboyant (http://www.flamboyant.com/) We didn’t stay for very long it wasn’t very busy we had some rum punch and rum and cokes, bit to eat and left as tomorrow we had to leave for St Lucia.
