Bleary-eyed and half-asleep, we arrived in the cold early morning at quaint La Serena. Hardly a soul in sight, we made our way in the 4.30am pre-dawn darkness to the little street of Los Rojas in search of Casa Maria´s
"Ring the bell" Once...twice...three times... "Do you think someone will answer?" "Oh, I hear someone" "Hola? Casa Maria`s?" "Si, si! Come in..."
The door opened to a warm and cosy living room and Adreas, Maria´s son, showed us to our room in the outhouse at the back. Casa Maria´s; a pretty dwelling with bright colours and wooden furniture is a little treasure in La Serena.
Humble and friendly proprietors, Maria and Andreas, offered us hot coffee and we settled into this temporary home quickly, while Andreas ensured we had everything a backpacking traveller needed, and Maria fussed over us like a clucky grandmother :)
We spent a relaxing afternoon in the town of La Serena exploring the European-styled layout and architecture, and busying ourselves with laundry, journal entries, etc etc...
"Shall we go for dinner?" "Erm...now?" "Mmmm...yea....up to you" "Mmmm...areyou hungry?" "Sleepy..." "Yeah, me too" "Mhhmm...ZZzzzzzz"
NOTE: We did not make it out to dinner that night. Instead, we napped and made do with bread, eggs, cheese and spinach for dinner. After that, we fell asleep again...it´s been quite a tiring start!
