The whole division came to the Island of Langkawi for our annual refresher course in 2005.
This would be my first time coming to this island. We spent most days stuck going through business reviews during the day, and then a whole day worth of outdoor team building session which included trekking through jungles, and building rafts from scratch. It was quite fun to think of it.
Kuah town was ok. Other than duty free shopping (which I didn't do much either) there wasn't much to do as most businesses closes after 7 pm.
I had planned to leave the island on the 12th (Saturday) after a complimentary massage session (which was heavenly) with a colleague. Both of us headed out to the Langkawi Aquarium; I wasn't too crazy about the idea but tagged along anyway - wasn't something to shout about, seen one aquarium, seen them all. Give me the real thing at sea anytime!
On the morning of the 12th we woke up with sight of haze setting into the horizon. Uh oh...not good. Our flight out was scheduled for 12 pm. As we made our way to the airport, visibility had gotten worse. And by the time we had checked in, there was announcement of delay for take off. Not a good sign.
Our flight ended up cancelled (after several announcements of delays hours apart) and there was frantic attempts by passengers to find ways out of the island. After a frustrated exchange between airport ground staff and passengers, both of us decided to take the ferry from docks towards Kuala Perlis (on the mainland) and then a taxi back to Penang Island. So did half of the people on the same flight!
The ferry ride back was excrutiatingly mind-numbing. For a person with good sea legs, I would not want a repeat of that again! Certainly overloaded with people and luggages, rough seas and poor visibility, I was gripping my seat so tightly my knuckles turned white!
Endured it for 2 hours when at last we reached port. Sigh of relief!
Took taxi from Kuala Perlis to Alor Setar before hopping on friend's ride back to Penang. It would be 1 am by the time I reached home!
