So I just got back to Sevilla from Tarifa, the closest point to Africa (14km). Other than the fact I got fried, which is typical, I had a blast! On the bus ride to the town I was lucky enough to sit on the left side and look out and see an incredible view of Morocco. I canīt imagine what the people 2000 years or more ago thought when they saw what i saw. When I got in I found a place to stay and headed out to the beach. During the bus ride and the beach I started and finished Catīs Cradle, by Kurt Vonnegut, which is an awesome book! After this I walked around the town to see what was about, and got some pretty awesome pictures. The town, known worldwide for itīs kitesurfing and windsurfing, consists of the old town and new town. The old town is full of skinny streets that wander left to right in seemingly random directions. This is the muslim style, and other than the fact that getting lost is real easy, it makes some sense as during the hot summer the sun barely reaches the streets and itīs much cooler than the new part of town. Well, this part of town isnīt really new, but it is what we are more accustomed to in cities in having blocks set up in a city grid made up of squares and rectangles. All in all, there is much more character in the old town and the architecture is a lot better, but itīs not too car-friendly.
After walking around a few hours I got a bite to eat and then took a nap till about 11. I then decided to go to a bar where I heard people playing pool earlier in the day. One of the great things about traveling and seeing new stuff is that you never know where youīre gonna land. As it turned out a part owner of the bar is an older American whose wife is Spanish and the other owner. I ended up staying there till close shootin the shit with Steve and drinking pints of San Miguel. It was a good night. Itīs weird though because I almost didnīt get out of bed after my nap (for those who know me well it was a real feat that I did!), and then I would have missed out on a meeting some really interesting people.
The next day, yesterday, I woke up at 1:30pm, pretty typical! I was going to inquire about kitesurfing lessons, but it was too late for doing that and relaxing on the beach. So, I ended up walking down the beach a few miles and watched people with their lessons. The sport is sweet!! In fact Iīm thinking of returning in September to give it a shot. Anyways, through the walking and watching, the sun won the battle and I am now paying for it. Iīve got to buy some sunscreen soon! Last night I didnīt do too much as I had to get up before 11:30am, otherwise they would charge me an extra night. So, I went to bed early to make sure I woke up. And now here I am, getting ready to watch the game and pack for Alicante tomorrow. Iīll try to get some pictures up soon. The connection here sucks and it takes forever to load the pictures.
