"Welcome to the last frontier" crackles the pilot’s voice as we start our decent into Anchorage and he couldn’t be closer to the truth, because for the last few hours all we’ve seen out of the window has been snow capped mountains and untamed wilderness.
Drifting down from 15,000 feet the land looks rugged, unspoilt and just begging to be explored. Alaska is the 49th and largest State in the USA, it’s so big you could fit Texas and California within its borders and still have room for a few more, even the International Date Line had to be bent round the western edge of Alaska to keep all of the State in the same day!!!
Ever since we decided to go on holiday to the 'Land of the Midnight Sun' people have been asking us why? Why not go somewhere warm? Why not spend two weeks on a beach getting a tan instead of going somewhere so cold? The answer to each of these questions was easy, why would we want to spend fourteen days of our precious free time, cooped up on a strip of beach on the Costa del UK with a million other people all eating full English breakfasts and getting burnt shades of red a cooked lobster would be proud of?
Nah, you can keep putting the towels on your sun-loungers and we’ll stick to the majestic mountain ranges, cascading waterfalls, snowy glaciers and gigantic icebergs.
All-in-all it’s the ultimate road trip and trying to cram everything into two short weeks is going to be a challenge.
