Today we went into the town of Rye. Rye is a very old trading town, which has roughly 100 old Tudor Houses (Henry VII). here is a wall around the town which protected it from intruders. When they built this place, the water was right up to the walls, now, there is only a small river that runs through the town, big enough for boats (not ships!). The first visted Ypres Tower which was also the town jail in 1560. We went up into it, and saw the jail rooms, which were really small. Apparently they used to put 6 prisoners in these small cells at a time. Outside the tower was cannons. It was pretty neat. We then walked up to St. Mary's church which is celebrating it's 900th year, so it's been in service since 1103. In the floors of the church there are tombs where people are buried in. We climed up to the top of the church roof. You can see all over the town of Rye. It was beautiful up there! We walked around the cemetary which is right within the church. There was some very old plots there, some you couldn't even make out anything on them. The homes there are really nice, most of the doorways are really small though. Some that even I would hit my head on! lol.
We had lunch and walked around and went into some of the shops. There were a lot of antique shops around as well. Then we walked and headed out to Camber Castle.
Camber castle is in the middle of a sheep feild. There were hundreds of sheep, and a whole lot of poop too! The little baby lambs were so cute!! It was a good hike out there, and unfortuently the person who was supposed to meet us there to unlock the castle never showed up, so we didn't get to go inside it. You could see inside in some areas though.
It's so amazing to learn about this history and actually get to see the places as well. I'm really enjoying that aspect of the school part. I think Europe's history is much more exciting than Canada's!!
