Spent the day in city centre.
Would recommend the bus tours around they city. The little one that went up to the Basilique and the double decker that went around the city, which you can hop on & off if you wish.
It was a clear sunny day and the view of the sprawling city from the Basilique Notre Dame was superb. You also got to see the different neighbourhoods & appreciate the history of the place.
For us, Marseille is not a place for peace & tranquillity. I'm not sure whether some of the locals want any tourists here! Some we met, including hotel staff seemed unnecessarily surly in attitude. Other people were very helpful for example a lady who served us in the Basilique gift shop.
It's a melting pot of a city. This means that if you are a local you don't have to queue, can ignore green pedestrian lights, drive your motorbike along the pavement & smoke in non smoking buildings.
This is a personal view, I'm sure that other visitors will have a different more positive opinion. Don't let us put you off, make your own mind up. We are glad that we came & experienced the place, but I would not look to visit Marseille again.
