2006-06-22, Marseille, France

We left Carcassonne this morning and took a 3 hour train journey to Marseille. We have a first class French rail pass. It was a very comfortable journey. I reserved the seats two months ago & there was no problem. Late afternoon we went into Marseille centre and visited the local history museum. This is situated below a large concrete shopping centre. The exhibits were from Greek/Roman period & showed that Marseille has a long colourful history. There were no English explanations or guides.

We then walked around the Vieux Port area. This had a certain portside charm, a jumble of old & new buildings & cafes etc. There were a few street sellers, beggars and youths hanging around the streets & the Metro. We also walked through a 'dodgy' area [Belsunce], according to our travel book. Didn't see any trouble but, you wouldn't want to walk through there at night.

We have a whole day in Marseille tomorrow.
