Water under the bridge....

There were no classes today, so I let myself sleep in until about 9, especially since I went out the night before. I woke up and went over to the school/house for breakfast. The staff had the morning off, so we cooked breakfast for ourselves, which was kind of nice. After breakfast Guadalupe showed up and needed to go to the store, so I went with her. We were going for breadcrumbs, but I remembered that we were out of tortillas, so we went down a few more blocks to a tortillaria... and let me just tell you that the corn tortillas that we buy in stores in America are crap. I really hate that kind, but the ones here from the little shops are terrific.

Anyway, we bought a bunch of tortillas, and the woman also had a huge chunk of cheese on the counter, and it looked good, so I bought some. I don't remember if I told you, but the Chinese students that are here (for 5 more months) don't eat cheese, so we don't usually have cheese in the house. But I was really needing a cheese fix, so I thought I'd give it a try. When we got back to the house, Lupe told me it was called Oaxaca cheese. It was a lot like string cheese in texture, but tastes a bit different. I think I'm in love :-).

I studied a bit, read a story from my new short story book and then we had lunch. After lunch we put the projector back up from yesterday and watched the America/Italy world cup game. It was a good game, lots of action. We tied (because one of Italy's players actually scored a goal for us... I was told that something like that happened with the colombian team last year and the player who scored the goal against his own team mysteriously ended up dead a few months later).

After lunch Jessica, David (her dad) and I went back to the beach I like in Boca del Rio. We got a table with an umbrella and went back and forth between playing in the sea and studying. The water felt like really salty bath water, it was that warm. And the waves were pretty brutal that I couldn't spend a concentrated amount of time in the water. We stayed at the beach for about 3 hours, and I still didn't manage to get sun burned. That 50 sunblock is serious business.

After the beach I came back to my house to find that we didn't have any water. None of the faucets or showers were working, so I had to pack up my stuff and come back to the big house to shower. That was a serious pain in my ass, but also part of the charm of Mexico. If I was at home and that happened I would be furious, but here, you just roll with it, there's not much sense in being worried.

The Chinese students cooked again and I had a little bit of dinner with them. Jessica's family was arriving at the school tonight and I waited in the big house to meet them (two cousins, one cousin's boyfriend and an aunt). They were all quite nice and I'm sure they will be fun to have around here.

I can't believe that I only have a week left here. This has been such an incredible adventure. I really feel like I'm accomplishing all the things, tangible and intangible, that I set out to accomplish with this journey. I'm really going to try not to waste my last week worrying about leaving and just take in as much as I can. Plus, I'm really looking forward to getting to see everyone again and to have my damn cell phone work! :-) Hasta luego mis amigos! Abrazos, Tracey
